Where Should Fire-Rated Recessed Lighting Fixtures Be Used?


Fire-rated fixtures can be used anywhere, but are especially important in buildings with multiple floors to keep a fire contained should one break out.

The most common examples include apartment buildings, mixed-use buildings, and multilevel homes.

Fire rated lighting tests determine:

The ability of fixtures to maintain their structural integrity and fire-resistant properties during a fire
How well a fixture can withstand fire and further prevent the spread of flames, smoke, and toxic gases

The most common levels of fire protection required for ceiling fans are 30-, 60-, and 90-minute ratings. A 30-, 60-, or 90-minute fire rated downlight must pass separate tests for each time period and it must not be assumed a downlight that states it can withstand 90 minutes of fire is also 30- or 60-minute fire rated.
